Our square bottles maximise the number of units we can fit into shipping cartons, and they fit snug to reduce breakage and movement. Bigger bottles also reduce the weight of plastic production overall which is why our standard size is 500ml!
This means you order less frequently and together we lower delivery emissions.
In 2019 MUVO decided to cease production of sachets due to the over-saturation of their use in the market, and the difficulty to manufacture and dispose of them sustainably. Sachets are a major contributor to plastic pollution and ultimately end up in landfill, rivers or beaches, harming ecosystems and wildlife. Instead, we have invested in travel and sample sized bottles that can be recycled or refilled with product at home.
Not all tubes are recyclable, and the recycling process is labour intensive and not easily accessible. To manufacture in tubes no longer met our long-term sustainability goals so in 2023, so we decided to transition from tube packaging to recyclable bottles. You may have noticed that Smooth Leave-In Treatment 200ml has had a facelift, with Rapid 1 Minute Treatment 200ml starting to follow suit. By the end of 2025, you won’t see any MUVO tubes in circulation.
Our MUVO bottles are made with PETG, one of the easiest plastics to recycle due to its relatively low melting point which requires less energy in the recycling process. PETG is also very strong, which means that our bottles can withstand some tough trips to reduce breakage and product wastage. Unfortunately, our pump mechanisms are yet to catch up and aren’t recyclable due to a small metal spring, however we are constantly working with suppliers to find sustainable solutions for the future.
When you’re finished with your MUVO product, unscrew the pump and either take to a local Terra Cycle drop off point or put in the regular rubbish. MUVO bottles can be placed in your regular recycling bin. One of our aims is to transition to post-consumer recycled (or PCR) plastics for all vessels within the next 2 years.
When manufacturing MUVO products, we consider the way in which we reduce our overall wastage by scrutinising the way we use and purchase bulk product and raw materials and designing processes that allow us to repurpose and recycle cartons and packaging.
For example, we often dispatch orders in used/recycled cartons and pack with recycled filling; rejected product is available for staff to take home and use if it is safe to do so; and we aim to save energy where we can by using electric forklifts instead of petrol.
Our MUVO ingredients are traceable and sourced responsibly from suppliers that support first nations supply chains, water reduction techniques and energy conservation. For more information on our ingredients click here.
