If you’re rocking a natural-looking blonde balayage with seamless blends and subtle dimensions, it’s best to use a toning shampoo to maintain the lightest hue. For example, if your hair is a combination of strawberry blonde and bright cream, I’d recommend using MUVO Creamy Blonde shampoo for maintenance. Or if your hair is brown at the roots, that’s been foiled and balayage with a dark blonde face frame, the best option is to use MUVO Balayage Shampoo For Brunettes.

However, if you’re rocking a half-half colour, a split-dye or bold colour-blocking, you might need to invest in a couple of different toning shampoos and learn how to zone-tone with MUVO. Don’t worry though, it’s easy to do with a little practice and the right products!

Here are 4 examples below to help guide you towards colour maintenance mastery!

Red Copper Hair with a Platinum Blonde Face Frame

Use 2 toning shampoos:

Apply MUVO Ultra Blonde Shampoo to your blonde face frame to keep it bright and free of yellow tones. For the red copper sections, use MUVO Flaming Copper Shampoo to enhance and maintain those rich red tones.

How to apply:

First, section your hair to separate the blonde from the red copper. Apply the toning shampoos one at a time, and rinse carefully to avoid blending the colours. Try to rinse out the Flaming Copper first as you don’t want the pigment to stick to the blonde section.

Difficulty level:

Medium – requires some patience with sectioning and careful rinsing.

Platinum Scalp Bleach with a Purple Panel or Split Dye

Use 1 toning shampoo:

If your platinum hair is starting to look brassy, use MUVO’s Ultra Blonde Shampoo to keep it bright. For the purple panel, leave the toning shampoo on for a few extra minutes to deposit more colour.

How to apply:

Wash the hair with a colour-free shampoo like Totally Naked first, then gently wash the hair with Ultra Blonde Shampoo, leaving it on for longer (up to 20 minutes!) on the purple side. If the purple you desire is super vibrant, apply it to dry hair for punchier results. Make sure you keep the sections separate to avoid colour bleeding during the processing time and then rinse sections at the same time.

Difficulty level:

Easy – you can maintain both colours with the same product and minimal effort.

Multi-toned Brown Balayage with a Bold Peach Face Frame

Use 2 toning shampoos:

To keep your brown balayage rich, use MUVO’s Balayage Shampoo For Brunettes. For your peach or light face frame, use either MUVO Just Peachy or Creamy Blonde Shampoo.

How to apply:

Section your hair carefully, and then apply either Just Peachy or Creamy Blonde (or a combo of both!) to the face frame. Leave for up to 15 minutes depending on your desired vibrancy. When you have 2 mins left of the face frame colour process, apply Balayage Shampoo For Brunettes to the brown balayage to maintain those cool, rich tones. Then wash out! Try to rinse Balayage sections first to avoid colour transfer.

Difficulty level:

Medium to Hard – requires careful sectioning and rinsing to avoid colour transfer.

Dark Ash Brown with a Pink or Peach Block Section

Use 1 or 2 toning shampoos:

To maintain your cool ash brown, use MUVO Coolest Brunette Shampoo. For the pink or peach sections, you can either use a colour-depositing shampoo, such as Ultra Rose or Just Peachy or keep it simple with a colour-safe shampoo, such as MUVO Totally Naked to prolong the life of your colour.

How to apply:

Use Coolest Brunette Shampoo on the dark ash to maintain richness and avoid any warmth creeping in. For the coloured sections, apply Just Peachy or Ultra Rose for up to 15 minutes depending on desired vibrancy or wash this section separately to prolong the life of the colour. Try to rinse the coolest Brunette sections first to avoid colour transfer!

Difficulty level:

Easy to Medium – depends on whether you choose to use one or two toners.
